Photograph Manipulation

Before Photoshop, there was photograph manipulation. Photograph manipulation involves the transformation or alteration of a photograph using various methods and techniques to achieve desired results.

Photograph manipulation dates back to the 1850's where photographers combined multiple images on one negative, captivating their curiosity and creativity.

Explaining Pinterest Designs

In this week's exercise, we are to list down our 3 favourite graphic design composition works from Pinterest and explain why we like the designs on our E-portfolio blogs.

Design #1

I don't know who I am (By sleepy.moss)

Fig 2.0 "I don't know who I am" by sleepy.moss

Description: It features a girl staring at a broken mirror with several different distorted versions of herself being reflected back, while also having soft feminine surroundings such as the lacy curtains, the use of pink, and deers with angel wings, I liked this design as it was similar to my own personal work, in the use of imagery, colour, and overall style of being soft and feminine and depicts an issue of identity that can be relatable to those dealing with the same issues as it seems to be increasing in the present day and age.

This Design expressed: It deals with our self-perception of how we see ourselves, in this design, the girl has a distorted view of herself, with each broken fragment of the mirror showing a different sorrowful or terrifying image, indicating that she sees herself as all these different negative images, this could mean that she may be dealing with some form of identity dysmorphia or issue as the title also seems to be hinting at this as well, it could also perhaps symbolise the fact that she truly has different “selves” in which she is monstrous and has trouble differentiating them with one another- as two fragments in the mirror shows versions where her eyes are completely blacked out, and one with sharp fangs showing inhuman physical qualities, the mirror being broken could also symbolise how she feels she herself as a person has “split” identities- referencing back to the title. Her surroundings are interesting as well, as it depicts feminine nature, colours, and design, this may suggest that though our surroundings seem beautiful or fine, the inside of yourself may be a different story as what we show to the outside world may not perfectly reflect what we are truly feeling inside. No matter the interpretation, it is clear the subject of the design is dealing with an issue of identity where she is unable to recognise herself properly, for her “true self”.

Design #2

Description: It features a girl in a monotonous-monochromatic scenery, which seems to be a dessert-pathway with hazy and fuzzy textures. I liked this design as it deals with the use of monochromatic colours and imagery in a smart way to convey a difficult emotion and message, where the same 3-4 colours are used throughout the image (black, white, lavender, dark teal), yet still manages to look visually appealing in the way they are applied. The texture is also intriguing as it manages to capture the look of a very blurry, foggy, and fuzzy atmosphere- giving off an interesting looking grain finish to the design, while the subject of the design (the girl) is more intricately drawn with less of the same textures the background uses to pull your attention to her.

This Design expressed: This design gives off a very dream-like state and a sense of nostalgia with the way it has been drawn, from the rougher scribbles, to the placement of colours showing a “glowing” effect, to the rendering of the design being more blurry, it is pleasing to the eye with the interesting use of texture, technique, and colour, it is almost “otherworldly” and amazing in a way, in how the artist was able to capture such a simple subject of a girl walking along a pathway, yet making it look like there is something ethereal and eerie in the design, the concept may be about a girl who is “lost” both physically and mentally as the design was drawn as cover art for a song, where the meaning expressed themes of running away to distant unfamiliar places as a means to cope with unresolved negative feelings, while at the same time being confused and unsure of where they are going, what they are trying to find, and what the point of doing all of it is for.

Design #3

This Silence is Mine (By Colossil)

Fig 2.2 "This Silence is Mine" by Colossil

Description: It features zero, who is the main protagonist of one of my favourite games- Drakengard 3, lying in a field of white flowers with a mellow expression. I like this design as it is also quite similar to my own work like how I have described in the first example in femininity and elegance, but also in the way of the style, composition, and light placement of the design as it makes the illustration have a very beautiful, heavenly, and soft feathery look that captures a certain innocence and purity in the visual that can be hard to produce in drawings which perfectly encapsulates the design of the character.

This Design expressed: This design gives off feelings of contemplation, rumination, and reflection due to the expression of the character. It suggests a sense of resolution in the self as well, as it is drawn from the idea of one of the game’s songs, which talks about these themes, trying to convey a message of suffering in silence, and rebelling aggressively against destiny, it also is a form of artistic-irony, as the girl in the illustration, zero, canonly has a very volatile and explosive personality, in which she is extremely hostile, belligerent and deadly- not fearing to destroy anything in her path, it is such a contrast to her character design who outwardly shows a girl with delicate graceful clothing and a look so pure and innocent looking that it deceives you into thinking the character may be soft and sweet in personality, but shocks you with the true outcome, showing how we really cannot judge a book by its cover.
