PRACTICAL
Stop Motion
For the final project of Video and Sound Production, we are to create a stop
motion video on anything ranging from either 30sec-1min long, depending on
if you worked with a partner or not. I decided to work with my friend Ilhan
as we both agreed to work together early on in the semester when briefed on
the project.
Originally, we planned to have our story be about isolation and envisioned
using a lighthouse to represent that idea since we thought we needed to have
a strong narrative with themes, though as we were discussing what materials
we could use I brought up with Ilhan that I had a doll set known as
"Sylvanian Families" along with a toy kitchen set for them, which gave me
the idea use both for the stop motion and to make the story about a mother
and her mischievous daughter baking a cake together. From there Ilhan drew
the storyboards on what we were going to do and we started planning for
other materials that we may need which included clay since we wanted show
the baking process. We had also set a date and time to meet and use the
studio for shooting our stop motion
Once the day of the shooting came, we first set up the kitchen, using
cardboard boxes as the walls and a piece of light blue paper for the wallpaper
to add colour.

Then, I started on with the shooting of the stop motion using an ipad and stop-motion app, following the storyboard Ilhan had made. I also created the several stages of baking the cake and some ingredients using clay, mixing around a few different colours of clay to get desired colours and effect to illustrate the baking process, replacing each scene with the stage of baking with the appropriate clay ingredients/object. I tried to move every object/character in a way that would make sense and flow properly in stop motion, and was careful in my positioning for them since I did not want any sudden abrupt changes in movement.
Once I had finished filming everything, I then handed over the unedited filmed
stop-motion to Ilhan for post production editing to put everything together,
mask out certain unwanted objects in some frames, add SFX, and music.
I have also created a spreadsheet as a guide for the list of SFX needed for
the video and have ordered them accordingly to the video so it would be easier
for Ilhan to edit.

Then I also provided Ilhan with some background music (https://youtu.be/jlXopoG-ZrA) to add in our video so that it does not feel too "empty" and conveys a more cute and fun mood.
Once Ilhan had finished editing everything, he then sent the files to me.

REFLECTION
The hardest part of the final project for me was surprisingly not the shooting itself, but in coming up with an idea. Its hard to think of something simple enough to fit into 1 minute, but not too simple that it would be uninteresting and bore the viewer. In working on the stop motion itself, the process was pretty meticulous. You have to have a delicate hand and lots of patience to do stop motion, since the movements are minor, and you must be careful in how you move your object and position it since it has to make sense in movement and order, additionally, sometimes I would accidently knock this over while switching out objects which made the process more difficult since I then had to rearrange them into their last position in the stop motion. The amount of work that goes into one is very tiring and detailed, but nonetheless I ended up having some fun with it.
