PROJECT 1

Mobile Application Proposal

For Task 1 of Application Design, we are required to create a proposal documentation for a mobile application project by first finding three company apps that we believe could benefit from enhancements in their design and create a draft proposal, then, after review, we are to focus on one chosen application and center our final proposal documentation based on it to serve as the basis for the future redesigning of the existing app in what we find unsatisfactory in terms of the user experience or interface design.

Phase 1

For the first phase of the project, we must choose 3 company apps and identify all existing drawbacks in the app and propose potential solutions to them. We must also attach company information, capture screenshots of all pages on each company application design and compile them onto individual slides, and for subsequent slides, we must focus on specific areas within the screenshots that we believe could be improved on their user interface design and user experience. Each analysis should have a rationale behind the identified issues along with proposed solutions.

To start off, I looked for some apps on the app store, and even reviewed current ones on my phone in order to find 3 suitable potential apps I could look into in terms of better UI/UX design, especially those which had critical reviews as they would be ones most needed in improvement since the user-base would have already collectively agreed that there need be overhauling in certain areas after having a bad or difficult user experience. After sifting through some apps, I have chosen the following 3 for my proposal draft:
  • Lalamove
  • Poshmark
  • Popit
The reason I have chosen these 3 apps is because from my own analysis along with reading the ratings and reviews of each app, there is a lot of current issues in its interface and user-experience due to technical or functionality problems, or even its visual design which hinders users from using the app properly and having a positive experience with it, thus why I believe it would be beneficial to look into as there is plenty to focus on in terms of its redesigning for the later phases of project development.

I then created a draft slide looking at the weaknesses of each of the 3 apps

Phase 1

Once the draft proposal was completed, we then needed to focus on one chosen app from our draft to center our redesign project on- for this, I have chosen the Popit Medication App since compared to the other two, Popit is the one which needs the most overhauling- from the design to its functionality, there needs to be a lot more features as the current state of the app presents a 'lack' in many different areas. I also wanted to focus on this app specifically as I believe this app is the most helpful from the 3 since it solves a problem which many face today- which is taking medication consistently. Sometimes it can be hard to remember to take medication for various reasons such as busy life schedules or memory issues- this app helps those which such problems and keeps them responsible which creates a positive impact on the person that extends the user-experience.

After considering all these factors, I then created my final Mobile Application Proposal based on the Popit Medication Reminder App.

REFLECTION

Overall, when reflecting on Project 1, the Mobile Application Proposal task, it was quite tough at first since when analyzing these apps I couldn't properly identify the issues as they didn't seem visible to me on first glance, but after having some lectures on what effective and good UI/UX design looks like, that is when I could find and criticize drawbacks in the apps I chose, I realised what improvements they could benefit from since I knew they would be considered suboptimal upon closer inspection and using the previous knowledge I learned from lectures. When looking into all 3 apps, they all presented with common issues such as functionality and navigation problems and suboptimal visual design. Creating a draft proposal for each app allowed me to highlight specific areas needing enhancement and think of potential targeted solutions for them.
