REFLECTION

Experience

Throughout the class and the assignments, I have experienced a clear progression in my design skills, particularly in using Adobe Illustrator. From mastering basic shapes with the Pen Tool to creating more complex characters using the pencil tool and shape builder tool, I have grown in my ability to express ideas visually. The challenges in each assignment encouraged me to think creatively and experiment with various techniques, leading to unique and cohesive designs. The assignments provided me with valuable hands-on experience in visual storytelling and the power of illustrations to convey meaningful messages. Whether interpreting SDG goals or exploring Edgar Allan Poe's stories, each project required research and conceptualization to create impactful designs which I found useful in aiding the development of my visual narrative skills. Furthermore with Ms Anis' and Mr Hafiz's feedback, I was able to better understand and do my assignments with their help, their guidance was instrumental in refining my work, so all in all, my experience of this module was very insightful and pleasant.

Observation

As I progressed through the assignments, I noticed my attention shifting from creating visually appealing designs to conveying deeper meanings through visual concepts and detail. Initially, my main focus was on mastering the technical aspects of Adobe Illustrator, but as I advanced, I started considering the underlying messages and emotions tied to each illustration and element within it. With each project, I delved deeper into storytelling through visuals, using the elements to enhance the narrative and evoke specific emotions. This shift in focus has enriched my designs and deepened my passion for using illustration as a powerful tool for communication and storytelling. Additionally, I have also noticed that my attention to detail significantly increased. I began focusing on intricate elements, subtle textures, and refined shading to enhance the quality and impact of my illustrations. I realized how even the tiniest details contributed to storytelling, adding layers of meaning and symbolism to my work. This shift in mindset significantly improved the overall cohesiveness and effectiveness of my illustrations, enabling me to communicate messages more effectively.

Findings

The journey through these assignments have taught me just how complex and multi-faceted an illustration or visual narrative can be by via the design process, what technical skills are used, the story or meaning behind the work, and more. The experience has also strengthened my proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, giving me confidence in making vector designs and using various tools effectively.
Before this, I had not much experience with vector artwork, I was more familiar and comfortable doing raster artwork, however as the weeks progressed and I learned more, I was able to come and appreciate the raster artwork more in its beauty, as it helped me create lovely high-quality work I am proud of. This class and its assignments have been instrumental in my growth as an illustrator and visual storyteller and I feel more confident in my ability to convey complex narratives through illustrations, selecting the right moments for optimal storytelling, and using digital tools effectively to enhance the overall impact of my work. Overall, the class and assignments have provided me with invaluable learning experiences that have refined my design skills and expanded my understanding of visual storytelling. I am excited to continue evolving as a visual storyteller and apply these newfound skills in future projects to make an impact with my work.
