REFLECTIONS

Experience

My journey throughout the semester has been a very eventful learning experience. In the beginning, the workload was thrown at us in an instant and there were many struggles that I was faced with in the assignments, feeling overworked many times, however, the constant perseverance has helped me in becoming more productive in my assignments and better in my overall technical design skills in a shorter amount of time. The weekly feedback we were given had a great impact on me as well as not only was I able to apply the advice given to the current assignments at the time but my other assignments in other modules as well utilizing my typographical skills in other assignments that required type, learning the different ways to apply typography through the tasks we were given has given me a better sense of understanding of the study of typography overall.

Observation

Throughout the semester, I've come to pay closer attention to detail in the letterforms which leads me into thinking how it may have been created, why the letterforms strokes have been created in a certain way, etc. I find myself asking these sort of questions, which are thought provoking and have actually helped spark creativity and inspiration for me at times which I am grateful for. I've come to learn the many intricacies that go into typography all play a role in improving the overall quality, and in further studying about them through the module lessons and the further reading section, why they really matter, such as the visual asymmetry in some letters, it all is important in the end- although they could be made in a way that is geometrically 'perfect', to the human eye, it could still present as optically flawed and need manual fixing.

Findings

In the end, I have found that there is much more to typography than the average person probably realises. There are certain rules and foundations one needs understand and abide by when carrying out some typographical tasks as they may not be so successful without them. It is a very technical art form that requires a sharp eye and patience as there are many things to consider when creating a typographical piece with its own dictionary of words- whether it is something as 'insignificant' as a receipt from a store, or something more grand and eye-catching as a billboard, it is an important art form as it plays a key role in the delivery of information, and a bad use of it can lead to misconceptions of the actual message that is meant to be received.
